So I've been reminiscing a lot about my trip to Nicaragua and have been making plans to return soon! But my mind always brings me back to the beautiful Island of Ometepe. This was probably one of my favorite destinations in all of Nicaragua. It's gorgeous, the locals are great, and the adventures are endless.
But there is one particular adventure that ended in the most bizarre and ridiculous way that I just have to share it with you all.
When we had to drive the car back because our tour guide was too drunk to function.
I had made a great little group of friends at the hostel I was staying at, Little Morgans (highly recommend), and we decided to take a little day trip to the San Ramon waterfall. So the hostel arranged for someone to drive us all out there in a van, and they would be back there around a certain time to pick us up again when we were all done.
We did the hike and made our way up to the gorgeous waterfall. It was such a nice hike and we met some locals up at the waterfall that were a lot of fun. We had a nice little dance party and everything.
Upon arriving back at the base of the hike, we found our driver completely and utterly... drunk. Wasted drunk. He could barely stand and was talking in some sort of gibberish drunken Spanish/English hybrid. At first all I could think about was how the heck we were going to get back to the hostel, but then I just couldn't hold in my laughter. I don't even know how to describe how ridiculously hilarious this guy was. And the situation was just so bizarre. He basically had one job. Show up with the van NOT DRUNK.
So our friend John had to drive the van down those bumpy Ometepe roads all the way back to the hostel. We didn't really even know where we were going, but we managed. Granted, we did have to pull over a couple times and let our Nica friend throw-up. TMI! But just another part of the story that made the situation so outrageous to me.
